Art, Not.

So, I know I said that Mery would be writing us a blog about her spring break adventures and she is and while she is I am going to insert my opinon on a little experiment that took place on campus last week.

OWU has lots of art scattered around campus. We have sculptures and we having painting and we have photography and we have books and we have art muesums and we offer a fine arts degree. Lots of art.

For a project/experiment the art around and inside of the library was covered up with plastic bags. This was supposed to show OWU students what it was like without art. To be honest, I noticed the structures more, covered as they were. So, instead of seeing campus without art, I saw it covered by white trash bags which, in itself, is an art form. In my opinion, this experiment didn't work. All it did was draw more attention to what was already there, which was art, which is the opposite of the intended goal.

I also have to comment (because there is no way I could let this slip by without and if I offend some people oh well) on the covering statues. Statues are sometimes tall and sometime short. Most are narrow and point into the air . . . think about it for a minute. And then these erect statues are covered with white plastic . . . do some more thinking. If that is advertising anything, well, I would have to go with safe pre-marriage practices.

Continuing on. After the bags were removed from inside the library, there was a whole new art display and I have to admit, its some good stuff. I am kind of curious about one thing. There are READ posters over the front desk that feature OWU professors telling people to read and those were left uncovered in this expedition to not have art. Too bad for photography, apparently, you are not art. And too bad for books, all of those were left uncovered, you are not art either.

Have a great one.

Pictures: #1 is as close as ya'll are going to get to the erect-covered statues I mentioned. #2 a covered painting that hangs in the staircase. #3 a covered gong that is in the library basement. #4 Yours truly.

Spring Break Re-Cap

So readers, I know its been a bit since the last post (always seems to happen around break time) but I am back and blogging about spring break.

Spring break wasn't so springy to start. On campus we has two feet of snow and at home we had a foot of snow. I have the odd feeling that I ranted about snow on the previous post but I don't remember so I will rant about the snow again. It snowed. It snowed a lot. I like the snow. I liked this snow a lot because I was home and didn't have to worry about driving in it. And to be honest, I don't think Lola (my car) could have made it through the snow if we tried. She is just too close to the ground.

After the blizzard, the temperatures climbed to fifty and the snow melted. It was sad, but at least spring break was springing up.

On these nicer days, Liv and I went and got chinese. Mmm, it was yummy. We hadn't been there together since Winter break and I was ready for chinese food. When we were in high school we used to go every week, because we both got out super early on Wed (it was around noon-thirty) and then we would just go to lunch at the chinese place. Good food, good visit to the past, mmm.

Beyond that I did a lot of work on the book. Six more chapters to edit and its done. Scary, yea? I'm nervous. What will I do without Lark and Alexander? I will find a way to get by. I've actually got a few more character bouncing around the brain. Get excited.

Oh, and another reason to get excited, Mery is going to write a blog for all ya'll about her spring break trip. Yay!

Have a great one.

Pictures: #1 is me on the penguin slide my sister built. We ran at the mound of snow, jumped on the mound of snow, and slid down on our stomaches. #2 is me standing in the middle of the road taking pictures of the road. #3 is Gretchen and I right before a snow ball fight (she won). #4 is Lola.

Kicking Off Spring with Snow

It is Spring Break and I am home. Yay home. And it is snowing. And it is not just snowing but it is snowing a lot and it is going to keep snowing until Monday when it reaches fifty degrees. Strange isn't it? But that is Ohio and that's what the weather does.

I hope everybody is doing well. If you're not I hope everything gets better.

So I don't know if I mentioned this before at all but I want to talk about it now because it is cool. Last Friday, Feb 29th, (Happy Birthday to all of you born on the 29th, by the by) OWU hosted the Global Outreach Talent show which raises money to send children to school in Africa. This year the money went to the Ghana Student Education Fund (it went there last year too).

The show included singers, violinists (who ended up winning the who jig), guitar players, and one very talented ukulele player as well as a few dancers. I went, partly because I wanted to go and partly because I was writing an article for the Transcript.

Did I tell ya'll I'm considering a double major, English and Journalism . . . its just being considered but will probably happen but I make no promises yet.

But the Global Outreach Show
is just one of the many events OWU has to help improve the world. Some people are going on Spring Break Missions trips. Mery is leading a group to New Orleans to help rebuild houses through Habitat for Humanity. And it will be amazing! Also over break OWU hosts Wilderness Treks. Selby is going cross country skiing in New Hampshire where there is fifty-two inches of snow.

Have a great week.
